Although designated part of “The Great American Desert” by explorer Major Stephen H. Long in 1823, the Panhandle-Plains geographical region enjoys weather events unlike other places in the United States. Through the record-setting cold and blizzards in the winter of 1886-87 to the current drought, area residents have endured to carve out a living on the Llano Estacado. Using the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society’s vast photographic resources housed in the Research Center, this exhibition will supplement “Wild and Wacky….” with images recording floods, hailstorms and tornadoes, extreme cold and withering heat.
