PPHM has one of the finest horse-related artifact collections in the United States.  The saddle collection runs the gamut from a crocodile-skin-covered North African saddle with carved wooden stirrups to a silver-mounted saddle given to Charles Goodnight by a Mexican government official about 1900.   Like the saddles, the Museum’s stirrup collection tells the story of the horse culture across the world, with examples from Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

WILD HORSES IN THE WEST

Examine the history of wild horses in the early Texas Panhandle and how their herds are managed today, from ranges in the West to individual training and adoption.
   Guest speakers:

   Patti Colbert, Executive Director, Mustang Heritage Foundation
Free for PPHM members; $10 for non members. Includes museum admission and exhibit opening reception.

CAMP WILDFIRE

Ages: 8 – 12 years old
A fun, activity-packed day, campers will learn the history of wild horses in the west and how their herds are managed today. Activities will include Texas mustang lore, cowboy poetry, leather tooling and halter-making, PPHM’s original Horseville game, and a personal tour of the exhibit, “Not Just for Show: Saddles from the Permanent Collection.” We’ll have an authentic cowboy lunch at the original T-Anchor Ranch headquarters on-site. The day will culminate in an up-close mustang training demonstration by horse trainer Byron Hogan and his horse Guapo, contestants in the Extreme Mustang Makeover.
Cost is $25 per child, which includes all materials and supplies, transportation, lunch, snacks/drinks, and camp t-shirt.  Pre-registration required.  Sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management and the Mustang Heritage Foundation.
